There are surprisingly, only a comparatively few films or TV series set at sea during this period. However, a lack of quantity is balanced by the quality of the films. Master and Commander and the Hornblower TV series, for instance, both were both met with acclaim when they were released.

One popular story for film makers has been that of the 'Bounty', with three movies being made over the years. The Bounty, the Anthony Hopkins, Mel Gibson version of the story, as well as being the most recent, is probably the best of the three. Another movie worth getting hold of, if you can, is HMS Defiant, starring Dirk Bogarde and Alec Guiness. It deserves to be better known than it is.

Captain Horatio Hornblower

Notes:
US Title Damn the Defiant. Based on the novel Mutiny by Frank Tilsey the movie stars Alex Guinness as a fair-minded captain locked in psychological conflict with Dirk Bogarde, his manipulative, coldly malicious first officer. This large-scale saga, which includes some spectacularly staged widescreen naval battles, offers a realistic depiction of life in the British navy at the time.
