About me

It seems sensible to give a little information about me. My name is Niall Kelly and I work as a Marine Superintendent for Dohle (IOM) Shipmanagment. Prior to this I was a Merchant Navy Officer for nearly 30 years and was a Captain on freight ferries before moving to a position ashore in the summer of 2006. This job allowed me plenty of opportunities for photographing ships, and most of the ship photos are from that time.

About the site

After owning a Praktica MTL3 for more than 20 years, in June 2003 I took the plunge into the world of digital photography with a Fujifilm Finepix S304. After a few days of playing with the S304 I decided that what the world needed was another website full of photographs, and these pages are the result.

In November 2005 the Fuji S304 was replaced by a Nikon D50.

The main job of the site is to act as a repository for my ship photographs. There were a number on prints taken with the MTL3, but these could not match the quality of the pictures produced by the S304 and D50, so all the photographs here are fairly recent and are digital in origin.

I have taken the opposite view with the other photographs, going for quality (I hope) over quantity. The camera goes out and about with us around the Island, and these photographs are the result.

As well as using the site to show off my photographs, I have used the site as a play pen to teach myself more about web page writing. In addition to HTML the site uses PHP and MySQL, which allow me to construct a dynamic site. Rather than having to add tables and edit pages whenever photographs are added, details are simply added to the MySQL database and the image files up loaded. PHP then takes care of producing the page. I've also used a little javascript to help with navigating round the site. The site was written using a mixture NVU and HAPedit, and the images were taken care of using Ulead's PhotoImpact 10 and Photo Explorer 8.5
